Group Home Program

Smithwright Services is a non-profit agency. In 1980, a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities, concerned about the need for intensive services for individuals with high needs, sought support through a legislative grant. These parents, the Smiths and the Wrights along with the efforts of Legislator Ralph Munro, were successful in securing the funding which ultimately led to the purchase of land and the development of an eight-bed state of the art facility.

The Smithwright Group Home provides a home-like environment for adults with severe developmental disabilities, some of whom have ongoing medical issues. The program is highly staffed 24 hours a day, and is overseen by a registered nurse. Four residents have called the GH their home for over fifteen years. As with all the Smithwright programs, parents of the clients are highly involved and work in partnership with program staff and with the Division of Developmental Disabilities to ensure the best care possible.

Supported Living Program

Understanding the need for less intensive services for adults with developmental disabilities, Smithwright Services opened the Supported Living Program in 1991. The mission of the program is to provide support, on a 24 hour basis, to individuals in homes that they rent and share with other adults. With staff assistance and support, residents of our five community-based Supported Living homes work, attend special vocational classes, go to school, or do volunteer work. The Supported Living Program is all about community inclusion; our residents have a network of friends, go on regular outings and are encouraged to be as independent as they can be. Though client services are individualized, they include such things as money management, attending community events and areas of personal development and interest.

Children's Program

The incidence of autism has risen dramatically in recent years-from one in 10,000 ten years ago, to one in 150 presently. The causes for autism remain a mystery, but it is clear that children with autism require special interventions. In 2006, responding to the need for intensive residential services for these children, Smithwright Services opened its Children's Program, with licensed staffed residential homes in the community. Children are referred to the SW Children's Program when their behaviors are such that living at home is not a possibility. Within the SW homes, trained staff work closely with parents, schools, therapists and other resources to address the special needs of these children.
